"It was a joke," I said, for maybe the fifth time.

"No it wasn't," she said, stoutly. This time she expanded on her complaint. "It was abuse!"

"It wasn't abuse," I scoffed.

"Yes it was. In fact, it was sexual abuse!"

"And you figure that how?"

"You made me endure a wet T shirt contest!" she pouted.

"Well, you shouldn't complain," I said. "After all ... you won."

She didn't think that was funny either.

After she shooed the kids off to bed, I got the feeling it had all been an act, for their benefit, because suddenly she dropped all the playfulness.
