“WHAT DID YOU THINK?” Jack asked as they rode the elevator down from Bradley Enterprises’ sixteenth-floor office suite. Even though they stood a professional distance apart, Eve’s light, fresh scent tantalized him in the confined space.

What he really wanted to know was if Eve had gone commando to the meeting. She’d taunted him with it Friday night, well, technically early Saturday morning. The question had never been far from his mind throughout the entire meeting.

The elevator chimed and stopped on the tenth floor to take on passengers.

“I’ll let you know what I thought later,” she murmured. A group that looked as if they’d just concluded their own meeting, pushed in. Eve moved closer to Jack to make room. The curve of her buttock, the sexy line of her back, the exposed nape of her neck, her clean scent—all of them set his body on red alert. It was almost more arousing to have her so near, yet not touching him.

There were two additional stops, allowing more passengers and causing her arm, shoulder and hip to press intimately against him. Okay, so maybe having her touch him was more arousing. But there was nothing provocative in her touch. They were wedged in the back corner like sardines in a can. But all Jack could think about, with her pressed against him and her scent a part of every breath he drew, was what had happened the last time they’d shared an elevator. His heart pounded like a jackhammer. Walking out of the confined space sporting a hard-on would be beyond embarrassing. Jack forced himself to imagine losing the vice presidency to counteract Eve’s disruptive effect on his body.

Finally. The elevator opened to the atrium lobby and Eve’s soft, rounded, tempting behind was mercifully no longer in close proximity to his crotch. For a man who lived in a state of perpetual detachment, he’d come perilously close to breaking out in a sweat.

She strode across the lobby, her heels clicking against the marble floor, confident and totally oblivious to the jackass in the Brooks Brothers suit leaning against the wall and craning his neck to check her out. She was oblivious, but Jack didn’t miss it. It should’ve amused him. Instead, it annoyed him.

By the time he’d paused to glare down the other guy and then proceeded out the revolving front door, Eve had a cab waiting at the curb. She was one of the most competent women he’d ever met.

Jack climbed into the back seat with her and closed the door, giving the driver their hotel name. Eve faced him in the cab’s stale interior.

“Bill Bradley’s a sexist pig. I kept waiting for him to ask me to fetch coffee.” Eve shrugged, more amused than offended. Was it because her family held a similar attitude? He thought it highly likely.

“I wasn’t sure what you’d do the first time he called you little lady,” he said, smiling. “Bradley’s a dinosaur if he doesn’t recognize your talent.” Great sex aside, Jack thought Eve was a smart, funny lady who was extremely talented.
