Chapter 11

J

acob did not like being told when he could do something, so Iggy stopping him as he got up, got on his nerve. But Toy squeezed his hand silently. After Iggy explained himself, Jacob had felt much better. Hana led them out and told Umeki and Tada to pack an overnight bag and their guns.

The doctor didn’t like the fact that they were carrying guns, but he couldn’t ignore Iggy’s precaution either. The Irish could have gotten the Italians on their side after Declan had left. This very well could be a ploy to get them vulnerable.

Umeki and Tada climbed in the car’s front seat, leaving Toy in the middle between him and Hana since Toy was the smallest of the three. It didn’t bother Toy at all. It seemed he spread himself across both Hana and Jacob. With a glance at Hana, though, he seemed to ignore Toy’s touches.

“This is so exciting. This is the first time I’ve gone more than a few miles out of town.”

“Princess, you’re excited about everything,” Hana stated, tugging Toy into his seat and strapping the seat belt on.

“Girl,” he said, rolling his r’s a bit. “What’s got your panties in a bunch?”

Toy was right; Hana seemed grumpy. He looked over at the quiet beta. The man was the opposite of Toy in every way. He was the calm of Toy’s storm. They really did fit together perfectly. Jacob couldn’t for the life of him figure out why the beta was ignoring his omegas pull to him.

“He’s been this way all week,” Umeki chimed from the front seat as he followed the Italians onto the main highway.

Tada nodded along with Umeki while Hana just rolled his eyes. “I’m fine,” he replied. “Just a little blue, I guess.”

His sweet beta turned away from the conversation. The man was upset about something, but he didn’t want to say anything that could make it worse, so he kept his mouth shut.

Instead, he reached over Toy’s leg and squeezed Hana’s knee. When the beta looked at him, he winked. “Good things are coming, I can tell. Just keep your chin up, okay?”

Hana nodded and turned back towards the window.

After a few minutes of silence, Toy spoke up, “who wants to play a game?”

“What kind of game could you possibly play in a car?” Umeki replied.

“I spy, of course,” Toy retorted with his lips curled in a mischievous smirk that was made even cuter with his cleft lip.

Before anyone could stop him, he started the game, “I spy with my little eye, something that is… um… red.”

And so, the car ride went in no time. Hana was smiling and playing along with the others. Jacob wanted to freeze this moment forever.

Before they knew it, they were pulling up to an old bed-and-breakfast. The house was a dull, dirty white and had shingles fall off in places with a handful of patch jobs here and there. But the lights were on, and a woman was smiling in the door frame with two small children.
