CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Oz

Oz left Jeremy sleeping in the center of his giant bed. When he was at rest, he looked peaceful and innocent. Oz’s lip curled because the truth radiated from Jeremy. His hate pulsed like a heartbeat. Oz felt it even from the other room where he waited for his guest to arrive.

Breaking contracts wasn’t something that was done. Ever. But if there was a way Oz vowed to find it. Jeremy was gourmet and losing him to the tangle of souls would feel like throwing a filet mignon out for a pack of street dogs to devour. It was unconscionable.

Oz sipped at a glass of whiskey and stared out the window. The winter sky was low and gray and the threat of snow loomed in the dark cloud cover. He’d have to remember to get Jeremy warmer clothing. His pet was always cold, unless he was curled into Oz’s side, or riding his cock. Oz smiled like a Cheshire Cat.

“Well, that’s fucking creepy,” his guest said upon arrival. “What’s got you looking like the cat who ate the cream? Could it be that cute little number you left resting in your chambers?”

Oz turned to face Bastian and gave him a dark glare. “Watch your manners, Bas.”

Bastian rolled his eyes. “Just go piss on him for fuck’s sake. I know he’s yours. He’s not my type anyway, but I can appreciate a cute little cinnamon roll when I see one.”

“A—a what?”

Bastian helped himself to a glass of Oz’s whiskey. His raven black hair hung in long ringlets down his back. It shone, even in the dim light the room provided. “Never mind. Anyway, for what purpose did you drag me up here, Oz?”

Oz didn’t want other little ghouls listening in on his conversation. Lucky for him, he’d learned a little party trick a handful of centuries ago. He extended his powers outside himself until he made an invisible bubble, for lack of a better term, around himself and Bastian.

“Oh, the bastard demon prince is serious about something.” Bastian seemed amused by Oz’s need for utmost secrecy. He arched an eyebrow and waited for Oz to speak. Oz always appreciated how laid back Bastian was. He was patient, unlike others Oz had known over the years.

“I need to know how to break a contract.”

Bastian almost spat his whiskey. “What the fuck, Ozark?” He dropped his voice to a whisper, as if there were a sudden danger of being overheard. “Are you fucking kidding me? Demons don’t break contracts.” Bastian pinched the bridge of his nose and took a deep breath. “They’re written specifically to be unbreakable. No one’s done it before.”

“I know it hasn’t been done. I want to know how to do it.” Oz shrugged as if it were no big deal. “There’s a first time for everything.”

Bastian’s expression turned thunderous. “You dragged me up from the archives for this? Oz… what the fuck?” Clearly, Oz had hit the limit of Bastian’s patience. Not that he cared. Bastian would help because everyone knew he was a sucker for information.
