NO MORE MIRAGES

S.J. Frost

Brandon, stop. I think…” Christopher paused, running his fingers through his light-brown, gray-streaked hair. “There’s B something we need to talk about…”

Brandon brought his Suzuki GSX-R1000 to a halt at the traffic light, balancing the bike with one leg on the ground. He stared blankly up at the red light. Even though the memory was more than a month old, his throat still tightened each time it flashed through his head. How could he not have seen it? How could he not have known? How stupid had he looked, his lips lingering near Christopher’s stomach where he’d been planting gentle kisses, when Christopher told him he shouldn’t go there—and that he should get tested because he wasn’t the only one in Christopher’s life anymore, and hadn’t been for a long time?

Brandon gave the memory a hard mental shove, trying to force it away from the front of his mind. He reached in the back pocket of his jeans, pulling out the directions he had printed off MapQuest that morning to the Miyamoto Dojo. He flipped up the visor on his helmet, glanced at the light to make sure it was still red, then double-checked the directions. Considering that he had lived his whole life in Chicago, he figured he probably should know his way around the Lincoln Park area better, but he never really had much reason to come this far north of downtown unless it was to visit his brother in Evanston.

He flicked his eyes up from the directions to check the light again just as it turned green. He folded the paper, shoved it back into his pocket, and hit the throttle, launching the motorcycle through the intersection. He didn’t even know why he was doing this. When a person’s life comes crashing down, he’s supposed do something drastic to move forward, not regress back to a hobby from when he was a teenager. The problem was he just wasn’t sure how to move forward anymore. He thought he had finally reached that new level in his life with Christopher, that point where he knew his lover would always be there for him, where the open relationships and one-night stands were finally over, where no matter how many times they made love, they’d still always want each other.

Made love. What a freakin’ joke that was. How could he even think Christopher had cared enough about him to call what they did making love? The only thing that separated him from all of Christopher’s other screws was that he and Christopher had lived together, the other screws knew there were other screws, and Brandon was good enough in bed that Christopher didn’t want to part with him. Yet he didn’t want to be faithful either, so he had given Brandon no choice but to part with him. At least the dumbass had told him he was a lying, cheating bastard before he passed Brandon something from one of his little sluts.

Brandon took a deep breath, trying to bring his anger down.
