Chapter 8

Hunter

I blew it! I knew I shouldn’t have brought anything up on the first night she flew out to see me, but when we were dancing, she was looking at me with wide eyes full of admiration and something else...longing. I’d taken it as a green light to push the issue, but obviously, I’d said too much.

I watched her weave in and out through the crowd and run out the exit door. She needed space from me—I got that—but I had to restrain myself from running after her. And then my eyes fell to her sweater, draped over the back of her chair at the table, knowing that even though it was summer, the evenings could still be chilly in Anchorage. I strode after her, not stopping to talk to a guy from church who stood in my way. I smiled and waved and went around him.

Once I was out the door, I spotted her a few paces away, staring out at the street, her long red hair full and almost wild as the breeze lifted it off her shoulders. I wanted to run my hands down the back of it and tell her how much she meant to me but I’d already scared her off and didn’t want to do it again. I stepped closer and cleared my throat. “Sabrina.”

She turned to face me; her eyes large as she took me in. “You startled me. I didn’t hear you walk out.”

“You left your sweater and I knew you would be cold.” I smiled slightly. “You’re always cold.” I pulled off my suit jacket and placed it around her shoulders. “Better?”

She nodded, appearing almost embarrassed. “Thank you.” A smile curled her lips upward. “It’s like a heating blanket. You must have been hot in there.”

I chuckled. “We were dancing, and you know me, I get hot easily.” My body temperature ran warmer than most which was a good thing since I lived in Alaska now.

We were both quiet for several seconds and then I drew in a breath and let it out. “I’m sorry. I’ve overwhelmed you.”

She bit down on her bottom lip, her cheeks flushed from the evening chill or maybe it was because of the line I’d crossed, the one I’d wanted to cross for the last five years but couldn’t.

“You surprised me but you don’t need to be sorry.”

“No?” Hope flooded through me, and I waited for her to tell me what I’d dreamed she would say one day.

“You shared how you felt. Don’t ever feel bad for doing that.”

Oh. Not the answer I was looking for. I nodded but didn’t say anything. If I did, I wouldn’t be able to hold back my disappointment.

“You said earlier you were interested in someone,” she said. “I didn’t think you were talking about me…”

“I wanted to tell you but I lost my nerve. I realized my mistake when I saw your surprise, but, yes, I was speaking of you.”

She nodded, taking a moment to let that sink in. “How long have you felt that way?”

“The whole time.
