Closed on Tuesday.

Haesje Claes €€€ Spuistraat 273–5; tel: 020-624 9998. Close to Spui, this comfortable, old-fashioned restaurant is full of nooks and crannies decorated with Delftware and hanging lamps. There is a wide-ranging menu but traditional Dutch dishes (especially stews) and steaks are the specialities of the house. Daily noon–midnight (kitchen closes at 10pm).

Izakaya €€€€ Albert Cuypstraat 2-6; tel: 020-305 3090, www.izakaya-amsterdam.com. Come with well-lined pockets for this Japanese culinary experience in the chic Sir Albert Hotel. The dishes are made to be shared: think oysters in filo pastry with wasabi sauce and caviar, dim sum of scallops with truffle sauce and succulent beef from beer-drinking Japanese cows. Music in the evening. Daily 10am–11pm.

Kantjil & de Tijger €€€ Spuistraat 291–3; tel: 020-620 0994, www.kantjil.nl. Some of the most authentic Indonesian food to be found in the city is served in a modern but soothing Art Deco-influenced dining room at Spui. There is a range of vegetarian dishes on the menu. Tempo Doeloe €€€ Utrechtsestraat 75; tel: 020-625 6718, www.tempodoeloerestaurant.nl. One of the city’s best Indonesian restaurants, with elegant decor. A too-enthusiastic embrace of the word pedis (hot) might bring tears to your eyes, but only a few dishes are so spicy they must be handled with care. Reservations essential. Mon–Sat 6pm–midnight.

Visrestaurant Lucius €€€ Spuistraat 247; tel: 020-624 1831, http://lucius.nl.
