CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Honor and Duty

The psuthal led us away from their village and down a well-worn path that ended with a metal door embedded into the cavern wall. Upon seeing me pull out the key, the group of diminutive warriors retreated in fear.

“It seems there’s something they fear down below. What will we face?” Helatha asked.

“The staff stated it would most likely be undead of some type,” I said as I ran my hands across the door. The protective magic was much weaker than on the door above in the throne room. Given sufficient power, a single high-level magic user or group could potentially break through given enough time. If we succeeded, I would need to find a way to strengthen the enchantments or else forgo forcing a group to get the key in the first place. The key slid in and turned easily.

“Excellent. My control of the undead will make our journey much easier. Perhaps I’ll pick up one or two minions to add to our ranks as souvenirs,” the soul snatcher bragged.

“Let’s see what we face first before making predictions,” I said as Xagrim and I made our way down the steps. Toxin disappeared into the darkness, presumably to scout ahead. The winding stairwell seemed to go on forever. Was this level that much deeper than the others, or was it my imagination? On the last few steps, I stumbled as sweat poured into my eyes.

“Master! What’s wrong?” Helatha asked as she rushed to my side. Helatha and Xagrim helped me down to the floor, propping me up against the wall. A moment later, Toxin reappeared, ready for combat.

“Get his armor off, fools!” Helatha ordered as she looked me over. With the help of Carine and Toxin, they were able to remove my breastplate and the underlying layers of leather and padded armor.

“These wounds on your neck and shoulder need treatment. The flow of blood continues,” Helatha said as she retrieved bandages from her bag.

“A-anticoagulant,” I said as I began to shiver. I’d thought the wetness I’d felt running down my chest and back had been sweat, but I’d forgotten the psuthal’s strange teeth also injected a chemical to stem the coagulation of the blood of their victims.

“By Castigous...you’re covered in bruises and welts in addition to the puncture wounds! My healing abilities require some...sacrifice. Who will give up their life force for the Master?” Helatha asked.

Toxin stepped forward. “Take mine.”

The soul snatcher shook her head. “No, you are something between life and death. It must be the shaman or the gnome. I cannot cast this dark healing upon myself.” She stared at Carine.

“I...well, don’t I need my life force to...live?” Carine said meekly.

“Fool, I do not care —” Helatha said before being interrupted by Gogbog, who slowly moved passed her, using his staff as a walking stick. Stamping his staff to the ground, he muttered a few indecipherable words. Two small totems appeared, pulsing with green light. The waves of healing magic washed over me, alleviating my symptoms.

“Be
