1. The authorship of the gospel and first letter of John is much debated. Concerning the gospel of John, the identification of the apostle John of Zebedee as author represents a minority position within the recent research. Nevertheless, the old churchly tradition unanimously ascribes the gospel to the apostle John, son of Zebedee; see Van Bruggen, Christus op aarde, 52; Carson, The Gospel according to John, 68; Van Houwelingen, Johannes, 23–28; Schnackenburg, Das Johannesevangelium, Bd. 1, 63–76. Different authors working with the idea of a Johannine school, nevertheless still see a (close) relation with the apostle John, the son of Zebedee.

In recent research, synchronic approaches somewhat increased the plausibility of the traditional position with regard to authorship, see Anderson, The Christology of the Fourth Gospel, 151, 165; Tovey, Narrative Art and Act in the Fourth Gospel, 270. See for a defence of the traditional position further Carson, The Gospel according to John, 68–81; Van Houwelingen, Johannes, 17–22.

With regard to the first letter of John, Guthry cautiously argues for the probability of seeing John the apostle as author, see Guthry, New Testament Introduction, 858–64. Lalleman defends that the author of the first letter of John, an eyewitness of Jesus, is the same as the author of the gospel, and identifies him as the apostle John, see Lalleman, 1, 2 en 3 Johannes, 11–19.
