Mind Games
Humans have a built-in mechanism of survival, an internal desire to live that is so strong, we generally proceed in ignorance. This inbuilt characteristic worked for cavemen, who had a heightened level of adrenaline, which governs the fight-or-flight response. Their greatest motivation was to avoid dangerous predators, unless they are the ones being hunted for food. Among modern day men and women, that same survival instinct still exists; however, we dedicate a good portion of it to viewing others as potential threats. Over time, we create huge battlegrounds, where mind games thrive. Everyone plays them to varying degreesâfrom innocent white lies to exaggerations to corporate assassination and bullying. People will attempt to manipulate you for fun or control of your assets, and you may not even realize others are playing mind games. Both awareness of participating in mind games, and partial or complete ignorance are equally scary scenarios. Realize that life isnât fair; it never has been, and chances are it never will be.
Refer to the chapters âDonât Be Afraidâ and âBeware the Narcissistâ to determine what to look out for. If youâve followed the trust model described in this book, you will combat the mind games directed at you without applying dedicated thought to the process. Trusting no one will prevent anyone from getting close enough; however, this may also motivate others to try harder to get to you. You must remain vigilant. If they do get their way and cause damage to your brand or make you shift your focus, you will become incredibly distraught. However, they will sleep soundly at night. Use the defensive mechanisms described in the âTrust No Oneâ chapter to deflect attempts from others who try to infiltrate your thinking space.
The individuals who are adept at mind games sometimes have nothing to gain. Playing games has fed their egos for so long it has evolved into a sport. Knowing this to be true, letâs discuss some common mind games that may be played within your operating space. For the purpose of giving titles to the negative people we encounter, I will refer to them as either narcissists or intruders.
Small mind games wonât influence you if you donât allow them to; assigning trust is always within your control. An analogy I often use in presentations is the comparison between narcissistic mind games and Internet trolls, who can be relentless. Unfortunately, they are winning the battle against normality. I donât even pretend to see what is happening inside the mind of an Internet troll. Those who are Internet savvy may have come across them in the past; they are lost individuals whose sole purpose is to boost their own self-confidence by unnecessarily attacking others. Basically, they are online digital bullies.
Like all bullies, they donât enjoy being ignored and may step up their mind games. That is one main reason I suggested you have a digital presence only for your product, and post nothing personal online. Most honest people are not equipped to deal with Internet trolls.
