Explanation

Though Collin was certainly one to oblige meetings, especially if Dr. Clef and Dr. Cimmerian came out for him, he was antsy. On the one hand, his encounter with SCP-049 brought some comfort to him. SCP-096 was okay and wanted to see him. He was very disorganized. He didn’t even remember to put something in his pocket as a treat.

“Where is he?”

“He’s in the center of the cell,” Dr. Skruggs replied. “That’s where he stayed when SCP-049 was removed.” He then turned to Dr. Clef, “SCP-049 and SCP-096 had a peaceful encounter. By the sounds of it, he was even able to look into 096’s face without incident. Then, before we knew it, he had apparently pulled a syringe from his bag and injected 096 with—something. We don’t know what it is. We have confiscated the syringe and we have already taken blood samples for testing. 096 seems fine and subdued.”

“Sounds like whatever the doc gave him, it was some good stuff,” Collin chuckled.

“Did 049 tell you anything of importance?” Dr. Clef asked him.

“He just said he dun gave Skippy medicine to make him feel peaceful fer a while. Ease his sufferin’. Didn’t sound like he was tryin’ ta hurt him none. That bein’ said, I’m glad that doc was able to get a look at him.”

“That is certainly something to remember,” Dr. Clef said with a nod. “Anything else of note, Dr. Skruggs? Dr. Parson?”

“Lavender,” Parson replied. “It smelled like lavender when the doors were opened.”

“I could smell it when he was next ta me,” Collin chimed in. “Smelled relaxin’ and clean.”

“Of all the smells he could use, lavender does seem to be his favorite,” Dr. Parson chuckled. “Will Mr. Dillard be able to go in?”

“Doc said he was lookin’ fer me.”

“Let’s not get ahead of ourselves,” Dr. Cimmerian finally said. “Mr. Dillard, I have looked over the notes provided by this team. Dr. Clef has also spoken on your behalf. Your progress with SCP-096 has been swift and overall positive. Considering what he’s capable of, this is actually quite relieving to hear.”

“Normally, D-Class staff do not stay with us very long. There is a turnover monthly and your time is just about up.” Skruggs added.

“Are ya kickin’ me out, Doc?” Collin asked nervously. “I ain’ts gots nowhere ta go.”

“Actually, that’s what I’m here to tell you—” Cimmerian replied. “No. We will not be removing you from the Foundation—if you are interested in staying.”

“Someone’s gotta look after Skippy, Doc,” Collin stated. “I mean, I knows yunz mean well. Yunz and Dr. Skruggs, Keller, and Parson, but yunz kinda suck at it. We’ve gots a bond.”

“Yes, you do.” Dr. Cimmerian nodded. “This is why we’d like to have you stay. It would be really helpful to us to have someone who can interact safely with SCP-096, get him to cooperate. I’ve even heard you’ve managed to get him to speak, which is remarkable. This progress of yours is invaluable, and the trust put into you is something incredibly special.”

“I’ve worked with SCP-096 for several years,” Skruggs said.
