I’d wondered about the comfort of Sterling’s mattress, but I slept soundly and woke to the sounds of birds in the trees outside the van. For a moment, I couldn’t remember where I was. Sterling shifted next to me and I remembered going to Sapph and coming to the campground in the van.

I looked up at the ceiling and watched the fan above the bed slowly spin.

A sound next to me had me turning my head to meet Sterling’s eyes.

“Good morning,” she said, her voice hoarse.

“Good morning,” I said, my voice not sounding much better.

“Not so bad sleeping in a van, is it?” she asked, stretching her arms out.

“No, it wasn’t bad at all,” I said. As a result of going to bed with damp hair, we both were a sight to behold. Sterling handed me a brush and I went to work trying to detangle the mess on my head.

“If you want to hit the bathroom, I can get started on breakfast if you’re hungry.” She yawned and then started pulling things out of the small fridge. Eggs, I was assuming.

“Okay,” I said and threw the robe on again and slid my feet into her sandals as I walked the short distance to the bathroom. There were a few other people doing the same thing, but no one bothered me.

When I got back to the van, Sterling had a bunch of things laid out on the counter and her kettle boiling water for coffee and tea.

Sterling leaned into me as I set my chin on her shoulder and put my arms around her.

“What would you like for breakfast?” she asked.

“Whatever’s easiest for you,” I said. “I don’t need fancy eggs.”

Sterling chuckled. “My eggs aren’t that fancy. How about fried in some pesto with avocado on sourdough?” That was something she’d made me before and it was delicious.

“That sounds perfect.”

Sterling refused to let me help as she cooked, and I saw how happy she was in this little space. Not everyone could thrive in such a small area, but Sterling was content here. She delivered me coffee in bed, and I sipped it as she finished cooking and handed me a plate. I didn’t start eating until she had joined me on the bed.

“Not too bad eating breakfast in bed, is it?” she asked.

“Not at all,” I said.

The food was just as delicious as I’d come to expect from her. I ate until I was full and demanded that she let me do the dishes to help out.

“Thanks, honey,” she said, kissing my cheek. I washed and she dried, so everything was done in record time.

We both got dressed and Sterling asked me if I wanted to take a quick little walk.

“I’ve stayed here before and there’s a nice little trail.”

Since the only shoes I’d brought with me were my boots, I put them on with my outfit. Sterling kept all her shoes in a bin under her bed and pulled out some boots to match me.
