Paige throws open the door looking flushed and adorable in the sundress I got her, and… panicked? Her eyes are a tad wild. I expected anger, but this is—

“We should go,” she says, shoving me out of the way.

I step back into her path. “Wait a goddamn minute.”

She huffs and folds her arms. “We need to go.”

I narrow my gaze on her. I came up here to salvage what was left of this morning. Last night I slept like shit, woke up early, and as a result, this morning went off the rails.

I planned to make us breakfast. Reassure her I would be there for her in case of a pregnancy. Be supportive and caring for Christ's sake.

Instead our convo turned into a dumpster fire that felt a lot like a breakup. Which is bullshit. We can’t break up. We’re not together.

Still, I don’t like how we left things, and I want to fix it, but something’s off. She’s off.

I’m about to question why she looks so god damn squirrelly when my phone buzzes. I pull it out of my back pocket, and hold a minute finger up to Paige.

“Ugh.” She tosses her head back and splays her hands in annoyance. God, she’s asking for an ass roasting this morning.

I look at the screen.

Angela: Enjoy your day off, lazy ass. Some of us have to work. *pic of Angela flipping me off*

I chuckle. Nobody likes getting called in Sunday morning.

Me: Sucker.

“Angela?” Paige says after I pocket my phone, and breezes past me. Shit. She must have seen my screen. I stop her with an arm around her torso, then snag the tag off her dress.

A smile plays on my lips. Is she jealous? She seems jealous. I should not be pleased by the fact she’s jealous. Those types of emotions lead to ruin.

“Ang is my partner at work,” I say as I snatch the flip flops out of her hand. I pop the hard plastic binding and remove the stickers before crouching down to put them on her feet. Her cute little toes are painted with a glittery polish, likely to match her outfit from last night.

I shouldn’t enjoy that either. Her cute toes.

“Ang, hmm?” she repeats in an annoyed tone as she heads out of the room and down the stairs. The skirt on the little dress I got her, swish sways against her perfect, bare ass with every step.

“No need to be jealous, sweetheart. Ang and I are platonic.” While I admit, Ang has a banging body, she is not at all appealing to me. Which I am grateful for. I wouldn’t ever want to work with someone I wanted to fuck for the same reason I don’t think Paige and I will work. I don’t do distractions.

“Can’t be jealous.” She doesn’t turn around as she says this. Just heads for the front door. “You’re no one to me. Remember?”

Her angry barb finds its mark. I try not to show how deeply it cut. I’m not no one to her.
