“Sit!”

“Stand!”

“Walk!”

“Heel!”

“Stop!”

“Roll over!”

Becky and Benjy had both learned all the commands Mara was familiar with, and now they delighted in making her sit and stand and sit and stand, again and again. Mara showed that she was a true champion and endured her trials with good grace, even waiting patiently when Becky and Benjy shouted contradictory orders at the same time.

Mrs. Cohen agreed to let her children walk Mara, and every day after school Becky took Mara to the park, accompanied by Mr. Freeman and the enthusiastic assistant dog walker. While Benjy and Mara played catch, Mr. Freeman taught Becky all sorts of new tricks. One day he brought with him a beautiful little book. “The story of Minky and his second-best buddy,” he said. “It's a gift.”

Becky looked at the cover and laughed. “The Owl and the Pussycat? I didn't know Minky was friends with a bird,” she said.

“Read a few lines, without speaking them out loud.”

Becky opened the book and read the first verses to herself, her eyes sparkling with happiness.

“Now close the book,” Mr. Freeman said, “and tell me the story of Minky's adventures.”

Becky was surprised. “By heart?”

“Have a go.”

Becky thought for a moment and recited:

“The owl and the pussycat went to sea

In a beautiful pea-green boat.

They took some honey and plenty of money

Wrapped up in a five-pound note.”
