So, then, what is the scenario for using 1 or TRUE, and why would Excel default to that value? While I cannot answer the second question, we will address the first question for most of this section.

Microsoft uses the term approximate match when describing the use of range. I find this somewhat misleading because it is not the intuitive wildcard match, where we look for a string with a specific beginning or ending, and the other characters could be anything. For more on wildcard searches, see “Searching with Wildcards” in the Appendix.

So what does an approximate match do if we treat it like a wildcard match?
