That evening, Callum sat at his kitchen table and opened his New Testament to the gospel of John, like the chaplain had suggested. As before, he didn’t fully understand what he was reading, although he grasped it was truth and held the message of life that he’d been missing but was now seeking. When he reached chapter three, verses sixteen to twenty-one spoke directly to him.

‘For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.’

As he re-read the verses, this time aloud, he felt his heart shift and knew for a certainty that God’s sacrificial love surpassed anything he’d ever known.

He closed the book, and bowing his head, clasped his hands. “Dear God, I don’t deserve Your love. I still don’t fully understand it, but I want to. Please show me the way. Show me what I need to do, because right now, I feel lost.” The image of Fleur came to him, and the comforting touch of her hand in his. “Keep her safe, Lord, even if she’s not meant for me. I want her to be happy. I feel so guilty about Jeff, although I know deep down his death wasn’t my fault. She deserves happiness.” He brushed his eyes and inhaled slowly.

As he settled himself for the night and prepared for bed, his prayers echoed in his heart with expectancy.

That night, he had another dream. Not the same dream he’d been having. In this one, a man, swarthy and Middle Eastern, walked towards him, holding out his hand. A stillness radiated from him that seemed to disrupt the very air around him. As he approached and Callum looked into the man’s eyes and saw the love and compassion that radiated from within, he gasped and knew instantly who He was.

Shocked, Callum was unable to move until the man reached him and held out a hand. “Come, Callum.”

“You know my name?”

He smiled. “Of course. I’ve known you since before you were born. We’ve always known each other; you’d just forgotten. Take my hand.”

Callum took His hand and stood to his feet, trembling as he came eye to eye with his Lord and Saviour, too filled with awe to speak.
