AN ANCHOR for OUR SOUL

IN THE DESERT seasons of life, at some point our circumstances begin to wear us down. They are like the thunderstorms that used to pound us day after day in the late summers of my childhood on the Texas Gulf Coast. Bad news, a crushing word, failure, watching someone else get chosen to do something I had hoped to do, or seeing someone else receive the award and praise I longed to experience. Or maybe it’s just being overlooked … again. When these experiences come in waves, they can hit us with a disorienting force that begins to twist our view of reality.

When I’m worn down by waves of discouragement, I become vulnerable to the voices of the Enemy and my flesh. These voices accuse me of weakness, magnify my faults and failures, and eventually begin to sound like my own. They take the wounded areas of my heart, those not yet healed by Jesus, and use them as a lens to distort reality. They paint a picture of my life that tells me I can never win, and I might not even survive. This is the point where we begin to lose hope. We can live without a lot of things, but we can’t live long without hope. There is a way of hope in the desert, a path that leads out of the labyrinth of despair to an anchor in the storm.
