Chapter Eight

Persephone

Setting up the breakfast buffet, I could feel Dom’s gaze burning a hole in my back. I knew if I looked at him, I’d break down. My hands were already shaking, and my mind struggled to maintain its limited sanity. Instead, I opted to keep myself busy and piled food onto the plates.

Just as I was about to make my escape to the kitchen, I saw two figures enter the room. My blonde hair fell in front of my face as I got my first up-close and personal look at Mirabella Moretti. As much as I wanted to deny it, she was a gorgeous woman. Not much older than I was, and about my height and build. Her long black locks fell softly down her back, and even in workout clothing, she was stunning. She had a natural poise to her stride that only cultured rich girls could possess. Though I found hers to be inviting and pleasant, unlike the other silver-spooned bitches I’d encountered.

Anthony went into detail about the extravagant birthday the Agostinos were throwing for her. She smiled, and damn, if the bitch didn’t look as sweet as everyone said she was.

My thoughts quickly shut off as her father turned towards me, barking orders to fetch the girl a plate. You know, since the princess couldn’t be tasked with feeding herself—I wouldn’t mind if she choked on it.

Unsure of how to proceed, I piled a dish full of buffet selections and placed it in front of her, doing my best to ignore her gracious expression. I almost smiled back but thankfully her father chose that moment to freak out.

“The fuck is wrong with you? Stupid, stupid girl! She has a party tonight! She gets what her mother has!” Lunging for the plate before I could take it, he flipped it off the table. The appetizing waffles, which were piled high with whipped cream and strawberries, plastered the front of my uniform. I shook in fright, waiting for the commotion to ensue. “Jesus Christ! Incompetence. The fuck were you thinking, Dominic?” He snarled before exiting the room, rambling down the hallway, as I dropped to my knees to retrieve the plates.

Bella and her mother kneeled beside me, cleaning up the mess from the floor and whispering apologies. My limbs felt like dead weight and my mind was in a tailspin. I was petrified that my monsters were going to let loose at any moment and ruin my plans. In that same breath, I was disheartened by my own weakness in allowing these men to treat me like this.

“What did he mean, Dominic?” Bella asked her brother in a small, innocent voice.

He seemed lost to the plethora of unspoken punishments sure to come my way. I was both pleased and terrified; my breaths came out as harsh pants as I tamped down my inner demons. But it was like sand pouring through my hands… a losing battle.

Such a disappointment. The voice once again bounced around in the confines of my mind, and I had to bite my cheek to hold in my gasp—a fearful squeak slipping free.
