Chapter 9

G

rizz didn’t want to tell the story of his past, of his brother, but he couldn’t deny this omega anything. The words burned like acid on his tongue as he fought to keep them in. He pressed his lips gently to Caleb’s. He knew he was stalling, but he couldn’t look at the man. His knot was deflating fast, faster than knots normally did while an omega was in heat. The pheromones in the air were quickly dissipating.

“I’m sorry, I’m not good at opening up to people.”

Caleb rolled his eyes. “I c-could h-have t-told you th-that.”

Grizz smiled. Even though he’d been trying to fight the attraction he had to the omega in front of him, he had found himself happier than he could remember in the last couple of weeks.

“My life has not been good, Caleb. My dad was a wolf and my mother a bear. They only ever had my brother and me. I’m older by a few minutes, but I’m a bear and my brother a wolf.”

“And y-your b-brother is G-Gaston.”

Grizz smirked. “Got that from Pyro, did ya? Yeah, Cobra’s my brother,” he said with a sigh. “Pyro’s the only one who refuses to use his road name. It’s a sign of disrespect.”

“F-from w-what Pyro t-told me, I d-don’t think he d-deserves r-respect.”

“No, he doesn’t. Not really.”

“So, wh-what h-happened?”

“Our pack became a motorcycle club shortly after World War I. My father, the Alpha, became the president. Even before the transition, I was set to become the next Alpha, as is my birth right. My brother hated me for it. Even when we were kids, he despised both me and my mom. He learned to be speciesist from my uncle. It didn’t matter that we were litter mates. I was a bear, and he felt that my mother and I, and even my father for mating a bear, shouldn’t be allowed in the pack.

“My father was injured in World War II, and his wolf couldn’t heal him. Before the injury, there was no way my brother or uncle could beat him in a challenge, but my father didn’t stand a chance after he’d been paralyzed. I tried to fight in his stead, but he wouldn’t let me. My uncle won the challenge, becoming the next Alpha, but my power-hungry brother turned on my uncle. Already injured by my father, my uncle didn’t stand a chance.”

“Ssh, it’s o-okay,” Caleb whispered, and Grizz hadn’t even realized he was crying. He’d never told the story before. All of his inner circle, except for Pyro, had been there when it happened, and he was fairly sure Zen had told Pyro the story a while back. “You d-don’t n-need to t-tell me the r-rest now.”

Grizz was already shaking his head. He didn’t want to go into it again in the future, so he would finish it now. “No, I want to finish. Can you roll over though?”

Caleb nodded and Grizz held on to the condom as he gently slipped out of the man. He discarded it before pulling Caleb into his arms.
