Chapter Six

Megan sat at the booth in the dimly lit bar, facing the front door, waiting for Kevin to join her. He has asked her to go with him to the lawyer’s office, but Megan didn’t feel as though it was her place to be there. Sure, they were now officially cohabitating, but the store still felt as though it was all Kevin’s. She was nervous, though, which was why she was now moving on to her third glass of wine.

The server, a scruffy looking guy in his mid-twenties, placed the glass on the table, and gave Megan a little wink. “Looks like your boyfriend might be a no-show. I get off in a half-hour if you’d like some company.”

Megan cringed on the inside and tried to stop the annoyance from creeping all the way up to her face. She smiled and said, “I appreciate the offer, but he’ll be here. He’s in a meeting.”

The young man shrugged and went back to the bar to pick up drinks for another table, but he continued to look over and flash a wink and a smile every time Megan caught his eye. “Hurry up, Kev,” she whispered, taking a large gulp of wine.

Ten more minutes passed before the door to the bar opened, and Kevin sauntered in. As the door closed behind him, he stopped for a second and blinked repeatedly, trying to get his eyes to adjust to the gloomy interior.

The server approached Kevin and had a brief conversation with him before pointing in the direction of the booth where Megan sat. She couldn’t help but notice that the server looked dismayed as he watched Kevin walk her way.

“How did it go?” she asked, barely giving him a chance to settle in his seat.

Reaching across the table, Kevin took Megan’s hand and said, “Let me get a drink first, and then I’ll tell you.”

The server arrived and wordlessly handed Kevin a beer, not casting so much as a single glance at Megan, for which she was pleased. Tipping back the bottle, Kevin took a major slug before wiping his mouth with the back of his hand, a quiet belch passing his lips. “Excuse me,” he said, sending a warm blast of beer breath in Megan’s direction.

“Well?” she said impatiently.

Kevin slid a manila folder across the table. “Take a look inside there.”

She opened the folder and saw a stack of documents sitting inside, held together by a shiny paper clip. Brightly colored Post-It notes poked out from between the pages, which was where her eyes immediately landed. “What am I looking at? I don’t speak legalese.”

“Upper left corner, under the paper clip.”

It took a moment for the words to register, but when they did, and she looked, all she saw were a bunch of zeroes. “Does that say what I think it says.”

“Yes,” Kevin said, polishing off the beer and holding the empty bottle above his head in the universal symbol for a refill.

“This is...it’s...”

“Life-changing is what it is, Megan, and I want you to be there for all of it.
