Chapter Six
Saturday came fast. I didn't see Clint much the rest of the week. I'd had a date with a potential client on Thursday that went about as expected. Dinner, dancing, and sex. Clint showed up briefly for the dinner part to make his pitch but left the dancing and sex to us. The guy was a middle-aged entrepreneur and quite nervous about the whole thing. That didn't stop him from putting his dick in me, though. He made an appointment to come in the following Monday and open an account.
It was a warm breezy day as I walked toward the community garden on the corner of Thirteenth and Walnut. Dozens of peopleâadults and kids alikeâbuzzed around the garden area carrying plants and small hand shovels. The air smelled like dirt and manure. A black wrought iron gate surrounded the square area that took up half a city block. Burnham Gardens was engraved on a dark stained wooden sign on the front gate.
Finding something to wear was the hardest part of the whole thing. Burnham seemed to be rather conservative. I still wanted to look sexy, though. Plus there was the added factor of kids, which turned out to be a good call. I decided on a white lacy sundress that went nearly to my knees. I made a point to wear a bra and panties, which was weird because I hadn't been wearing either. I added a large sunhat, matching bag, and sandals.
"Hi, can I help you?" a very fit woman in her thirties greeted me at the entrance. She was friendly but seemed suspicious. The other women were all in shorts and tank tops. I was way overdressed.
"Yeah, I'd like to help out, if that's okay."
"Oh, um, okay sure. Do you have much gardening experience?"
"None. Is that okay? I'm willing to learn."
"That's fine honey. Come on in, we'll find somewhere to put you."
I'd never thought much about gardening. It seemed like something mothers did in their spare time while their kids were in school. The dirt and bugs were also a big turnoff. From the moment my hands entered the soft soil, though, I was hooked. Being outside in the sun with the cool breeze, physically embracing nature in its purest formâit was therapeutic.
I made friends with as many people as I could, partly to learn what the hell I was doing, and partly to find out about Burnham. I didn't need to ask as everyone started talking about him the second he arrived.
Paul Burnham was a stout man who appeared to be in his early sixties. He had a full head of light gray hair, was clean shaven, and wore khaki shorts with a button-up short-sleeved shirt. He wasn't thin, but he wasn't fat either. He had a good weight and was probably quite muscular at one point in his life.
He commanded attention, and even if I didn't know that he was some sort of self-made billionaire, I would have known he was someone important by the way he carried himself.
