Chapter Sixteen

After cooling off, Diana said, “We better get ready for the men. No telling who they have run into on the bayou.”

Caroline giggled. The big pots were brought out, the burners set up. Potatoes, corn and spices readied. The picnic table on the screened-in porch was covered in old newspaper, and a large trashcan was placed at the end of the table. Large ice chests lined the walls; cokes, beer and jugs of sweet tea were put on ice. Caroline was glad she had made such a large tiramisu.

The men arrived shortly after five o’clock with a string of fish, coolers full of crab and crawfish. “Dinner is here!” They exclaimed.

As the ladies started the crawfish boil, Gator and Cruz cleaned fish, someone said, “I am so glad we are cooking outside. The smell of fish would be in Diana’s house for weeks.”

Gator and Cruz went inside to clean up. When they came out, the party was already started. The crawfish and crab were cooking, and the ladies were gathered around the table, cutting them up.

“So, what is this dessert you fixed, Caroline?” Gator asked.

She grinned, showed him to the kitchen. “Tiramisu,” she replied.

“Wow, now that’s fancy! We’re just country folk here,” He teased her. “Were you expecting an army to show up tonight? That’s a large dessert.”

“We’re in the bayou. This is Saturday night, you are the famous Gator, and I suspect this place will be jumping tonight.”

“You’re probably right,” he said to her as they walked back outside. Already there were people Caroline didn’t know. Gator walked up to Maurice, Cruz’s other son, and Louise and introduced Caroline to Cruz’s son and daughter-in-law.

As they stood there chatting, two young boys rushed Gator, “Pa, Pa!” Gator picked up the boys and hugged them. “Caroline, these are a few of my grandkids.” The children chattered a mile a minute. “Where is your daddy?” Gator tried to ask. Wayne walked up, took the kids from Gator, handed them off to their mother and hugged his dad, “Heard you were in town.” He grinned. “Son, I’d like you to meet an old friend of mine, Caroline. This is my son, Wayne. I think you two have met before.”

She shook his hand, “Yes, we have, but he couldn’t have been much older than his boys are now.”

They smiled, and Wayne said, “Nice to meet you, ma’am.” Caroline felt old being called ma’am. Then she chuckled, thinking she was old…who was she trying to kid here.

“So, who else is coming for dinner?” Gator asked Wayne.

“I dunno. I think we’re the only ones in town this weekend. Anton might be, but I don’t know.”

As he said that, a car pulled up in the yard. Anton and his wife got out, and kids seemed to overflow the back end of the pickup. Anton and Marie came up to Gator. “And this is my eldest son, Anton and his wife, Marie and their crew. I’d introduce the kids, but that would mean hunting them all down.” Everyone laughed.
