Outside, around the corner from Batu’s building, old man Skorobogat yanked an earbud from his ear in annoyance.

“Now they’ve gone all sentimental and blubbery! Hey, where’d you stick the microphone, dummy? You remember?”

“I remember, Grandpa!” Scorpion said, trying to get back in the old man’s good graces. “I stuck it right under his desk.”

“Under his desk?” Scorpion’s grandfather sounded unhappy. He took his wallet out of his pocket. “What if they find it?”

“Who’s gonna find it? Do you know how much crap he has piled on that desk?” Scorpion’s eyes greedily tracked every deliberately slow movement of the arthritic fingers. “Thanks, Gramps!”

He grabbed the money from his grandfather’s hand and tried not to show his disappointment. Five hundred tenge was a joke! But he wasn’t about to argue or complain. That would cost him more. The pain in his side from where his grandfather had poked him still made itself felt every time he took a deep breath.
