The Battle of Bethany and Ebenezer

Have you come to help with the do-gooding as well, Bethany?” asked the beast. “This is the best day of my lifesies!”

The fury on Bethany’s face suggested that it was not shaping up to be the best day of her life. She kept her eyes fixed on Ebenezer as she scooted toward them.

“You might want to slow down a lit—” began Ebenezer.

His helpful advice was cut short by Bethany jumping off her still-moving scooter and tackling him to the ground. She pinned him down and started beating him around the head.

“You IDIOT!” she shouted. “You traitor! You dim-witted nincompoop of a buffoon! How could you do this to me? We’re supposed to be a team!”

“I’m newsies to all this, but I don’t think that’s how do-gooding is supposed to work, Bethany. You’re hurting poor ickle Ebenezer,” said the beast.

Ebenezer pulled Bethany’s hair. She kicked him repeatedly where she knew it would hurt most—his beloved waistcoat.

“You’re really going to accuse me of being a bad teammate?!” said Ebenezer as they struggled. “You weren’t being very team-minded when you abandoned me last night!”

“It was one night!” said Bethany. “I can’t believe you’re punishing me by taking the beast around the neighborhood.”

“This isn’t me punishing you. This is me trying to save my own skin,” panted Ebenezer. He decided not to mention the fact that he was quite enjoying all the praise he was getting from do-gooding with the beast. “If I hadn’t done something, I’d probably be in a laser cage by now.”

“You’d be better off in a laser cage, if this is the sort of thing you do when I’m not around,” said Bethany.

“As a matter of fact, today has been a huge success,” said Ebenezer. “We’ve been do-gooding all over the place. And it’s convinced me that Mr. Nickle was right! The beast has changed!”

Bethany was so appalled by Ebenezer’s words that she stopped kicking him. He repaid the favor by releasing her hair.

“You can’t be serious?!” she said.

“I’ve spent more time with the beast than anyone on this planet, and after everything I’ve seen today, I’m sure that the creature really has changed,” said Ebenezer. He climbed to his feet and checked for signs of damage to his outfit. “There’s nothing left of the old beast.”

“Oh yaaaaysies!” cried the beast.

“So you’re not just doing this to get back at me, then?” asked Bethany. “You really have been tricked by the beast?”

“I haven’t been tricked by anyone!” said Ebenezer.

“No tricksies from me,” said the beast.

“And once you’ve spent more time with it, you’ll see I’m telling the truth,” said Ebenezer.

“That is never gonna happen,” said Bethany. “Unlike you, I have a brain.”

Ebenezer tightened his cravat and straightened his trousers with what little dignity he could muster. He treated Bethany to his coolest stare.

“Well, that’s a shame,” he said. “Because the beast and I are going to do some more do-gooding.”

“No, you’re not!” said Bethany. “I forbid it!”

“You can do no such thing,” said Ebenezer. “But you can join us if you like.
