Chapter 10

Our conversation turned to lighter matters as soon as we were out of the infirmary grounds.

“I’m guessing you’re off to find your new friend now, right, Torsten?” I asked.

He clapped his hands together and rubbed them together, grinning. “Oh yes, yes I bleedin’ well am, you’d better believe it, Leo! Don’t wait up for me!”

I chuckled. “Oh, don’t worry, I won’t. Just remember that you do need some sleep, though! We start classes again soon, and they’re putting us in a very intensive program, from what I hear, to prepare us for the battle against Ezeldor and his forces.”

“I’ll be just fine, Leo, don’t you worry about me!” Torsten said. “See you tomorrow -- or maybe only in a few days, lad, if things go exceptionally well!”

I chuckled and waved farewell to him, grinning to myself as I watched him practically running off on his stumpy legs. I couldn’t blame him for being in such a rush to meet his lady friend. If I’d had to go as long as he had without getting laid, I would be in quite a state now, too.

As it was, though, the previous night alone I’d had more sex than most guys did in a few months, so women were the last thing on my mind. Instead, I was thinking about Axlor. Specifically, I was thinking about what I needed to do to prepare him for battle against the traitor mages.

He had a weakness to lightning, both in natural and magic forms, and I was sure that there would be at least one Lightning Mage among the ranks of the traitors. In order to keep the dragon safe from lightning attacks, I was going to need some magical protection for him, and I needed to speak to someone high up about this—either Inquisitor Emberstone or Warden Syleth. In light of the current situation, I figured that they could bend or break a few rules about magical chits needed for transactions in the Jade Bastion’s marketplace, or perhaps they could even direct me to one of the Forger Mages, who could custom-make some items for Axlor to give him resistance to lightning.

Thus, as soon as Torsten had gone, I set off for the residences of Warden Syleth and Inquisitor Emberstone. I figured I would try Syleth first, as he was the most senior figure in the Jade Bastion in the absence of the Archmage.

Although I had been inside Inquisitor Emberstone’s quarters once—when he had scolded me for using a levitation scroll to dump a load of pig manure over the gang of elvish bullies—I had never seen the inside of Warden Syleth’s quarters. In fact, I had no idea where his private residence was, so I pulled aside the first servant I saw and asked them for directions on how to get there.

“Do you know that huge, ancient tree near the Western Gate, Submage?” asked the servant, a young, scrawny fellow with about the patchiest, scraggliest beard I’d ever seen.

“Yeah, I know where that tree is,” I answered.
