Neeta

She knew something was wrong, the moment she had set her eyes on Pia’s paintings.

She couldn’t understand how people were so entranced by the works of a clearly disturbed mind. The paintings were absolutely gruesome and grotesque, spelling out clearly that Pia was seriously, seriously sick.

The women in it, their features getting blurrier and uglier, with each progressive canvas, looked like they were baying for blood. Pia had always had a sick obsession with monsters, courtesy of Ila, but her technique had always been impeccable. These bleeding colours, blurry features, haphazard limbs ... they were all a cry for help.

As was her behaviour at Khushi’s party, and her not calling or responding to Neeta’s messages in the days that followed.

Neeta looked around the room to see if anyone else could see it. But they were all too busy, talking, laughing, drinking wine, and eating cheese and crackers. No one could see her baby was falling apart.

How could they all not see it?

As she looks at Pia’s eyes now – recalling her laughter while she watched that poor girl burn – Neeta knows it is too late.

Those eyes.

Yellow and filled with venom.

Neeta has seen them like that before, and she knows what it means.

The demon’s back.
