Sabre had told me in advance that there’d be a few people hanging out at his mom’s. They had flown in for the wedding after taking the rapid COVID testing that Ms. Teresa requested from all of us and would just be over there shooting the shit. And I didn’t mind. I needed some cheer after the morning I’d just had. And hopefully, his family would be more welcoming than mine.

From the minute we walked through the door, all eyes were on us. There was only a handful of people which made it all the more awkward. But Ms. Teresa broke all that up when she pulled me into a hug and introduced me to everybody as the daughter that she never had.

“Come on in here and let me fix y’all something to eat.” She grabbed me and Sabre by the hand and dragged us through the crowd of ten, off into the kitchen.

“I can’t believe Teresa got Bre in her house!” I heard a lady say.

“I wonder if she’ll sign this shirt. I ain’t never gonna take it off if she does!” A young man’s voice whispered. And it was all I could do not to turn around and laugh.

“Let’s see, we got grilled chicken, brisket, and some of those homemade sausages that Paul brings home from Mississippi.” Ms. Teresa pointed at the spread in her spacious kitchen. “And there’s potato salad in the refrigerator. Oh, and mac and cheese on the stove. Help yourselves. There’s plenty!” She squeezed my hand, having no idea what that meant to me or just how hungry I was.

“We would’ve had baked beans if Sabre had come over earlier. But he told me about your situation, so I won’t hold it against him.” She squeezed my hand again. And I wondered if every mother did that. It made me feel so…loved.

“Wait, you let Sabre cook?” I asked, shocked down to the soles of my feet.

“Let?” She piped, releasing my hand to prop hers on her hip. “Girl, I gotta beg this boy to get in this kitchen. But when he does, it’s worth all the effort. I can’t believe he hasn’t shown off his culinary skills. Sabre, you haven’t cooked for this woman?” She called over his shoulder as he dug into a pan of brisket after washing and drying his hands.

“No ma’am.” He replied with a mouth full of meat.

“And why not?” Ms. Teresa piped.

“Because he knows I wouldn’t eat it.” I stepped in, washing and drying my hands before grabbing a plate and making my way to the grub. “No disrespect, Ms. Teresa, but Sabre doesn’t strike me as the cooking type.”

Ms. Teresa walked over to her son who was at least half a foot taller than her and no less than three shades darker and said, “Well, I feel very disrespected seeing as I taught him everything he knows.”

Sabre smiled, cheeks full from being stuffed with everything on his plate. He couldn’t even speak so he shrugged.

“I guess he’ll have to prove it.
