Two decades later, Dave and I are still great friends. Dave did move on and was able to redirect his efforts and emotions to more physically fruitful relationships. Dave moved about the country—and the world—pulling up his roots every three to five years. There were times when we lost contact for a year or so, but we would catch back up to each other and bring our lives current, sometimes talking for hours.

With the passage of time, on reflection, that night was very positive for both of us, though I didn’t realize it at the time. If you ever have one person in your life that you can call a true friend, consider yourself rich. I’m rich.
