“Sold? B-bought?” Ridge stammered.

Surely, he misheard. This was supposed to be a robbery. Give up some phone, valuables, maybe get roughed up a bit. Ridge expected all of that.

But being sold?

Stevenson sputtered. “That’s outrageous! Preposterous! We’re sitting Members of Congress. The President will not allow this.”

Juan laughed. “And how would he know that you’ve been kidnapped if he thinks you’re dead?”

Stevenson’s eyes bulged. He grabbed his chest. “Dead?”

“Of course. Panama has so many unsavory characters you know. So much rampant crime.” Juan looked wistfully into the distance. “Unfortunately, five Members of Congress were killed on their way to one of our beaches.”

Brant cleared his throat. “And what happens when there’s no bodies?”

“The local cartel uses machetes. You five were hacked to unrecognizable bits. Then thrown into the ocean.” Juan waved off the concerns, probably very familiar with creating these exact types of scenarios. “We’ll throw some human chum in the water to make everything believable. Don’t you worry.”

Dmitri grinned. “This not first time American politicians have, how you say, disappeared.”

“Correct. Haven’t you been paying attention to the news, Congressmen? International dignitaries and politicians love Panama and well, we love them. So much so, that we don’t let them go,” Juan said excitedly.

This was a lot to process. Ridge’s head was swimming. His heart raced. His asshole clenched in nervous anxiety.

This was going very badly, very quickly.

“Oh God. A few mayors from the northeast vanished down here a while ago. Not a trace. It was just dumb coastal elites, so I paid it no mind. Was that you?” Brant asked. He glanced back at Ridge nervously.

“Bingo! We’ve had quite a few of your state and local politicians ‘disappear’ in the past few years,” Juan practically crowed. Then he laughed. “And now, Dmitri found the perfect opportunity to move on to federal lawmen.”

“B-but...” Stevenson trailed off, eyes welling up with tears.

Ridge paused. He’d never seen the old man get emotional before. Not during the pandemic. Not during any of the mass shootings.

The old fart hadn’t even ever pretended to be sad during the many hearings that had to sit through about human trafficking in southern cities.

How ironic.

Snapping his fingers and turning on the charm, Juan focused on the group of Americans again. “Now that we’ve gotten that nasty business out of the way. Time for a nap, yes? Everything will seem better after a little sleep.”

Stevenson, not learning his five-handed lesson from Lucia, balled his fist and approached. “No, I refuse. I want to speak to your leader. Your manager!”

“I am the manager, you idiot,” sneered Juan. Dmitri took a few steps closer to Stevenson but Juan put up his hand to stop him. “I’m the leader. I am the boss. I’m your keeper. Your jailor, your benefactor. I’m your God.”

“You ain’t my God, boy! I’m a fuckin’ American!” Stevenson screamed.

A pop reverberated in the room.

Ridge screamed in shock. Stevenson’s short, stocky body slumped to the ground. His lifeless eyes rolled to the ceiling. Ridge, Brant, and their two colleagues stumbled backwards in horror.
