Chapter Twelve

“I thank you, Bo.” Olaf Swensen offered his hand. “I’d like to pay you something for the help you gave me.”

“Instead of pay, how about some credit?” Bo accepted his handshake. “Those gunmen took off with my money and my papers. Until I contact my bank in Virginia, I’m penniless.”

“It’s my pleasure.” Olaf indicated the shelves filled with food, clothing, grain. “Take what you need, and we’ll settle up whenever you’re ready.”

Just as he turned away, Bo saw a tall, handsome man stride into the store and shout a greeting to Kitty. She turned, gave a little cry of delight, and flew into his arms, to be swung around and around in dizzying circles until she was giggling in a way Bo had never heard before.

He experienced a sudden, jaw-clenching flash of jealousy that had him fisting his hands at his sides. He started forward, his eyes narrowed to slits.

Kitty took no notice as she was set none-too-gently on her feet. “Oh, Yale. You look so good.”

“And you look as bedraggled as ever.” He tugged on a lock of her hair. “Now tell me how you came by this.” He stroked a finger down the arm tied in the sling.

“I got careless around an ornery stallion.” She turned to Bo. “Look who’s here. My brother Yale. Since he’s settled down and given up his gambling ways, he’s become the unofficial banker of Misery.”

“Your…brother?” Bo found himself struggling to switch gears. A moment ago he’d been ready to throttle this man within an inch of his life. Now he found himself unclenching his fist and offering a handshake. “Bo Chandler.”

“You the lawyer everybody’s talking about?”

Bo glanced around. “I see word spreads fast out here.”

Yale grinned. “You’d better watch out. I know of at least half a dozen citizens of Misery who are dying for your services. In fact, if you look outside, you’ll seem them starting to form a line.”

Bo looked up to see that Yale had spoken the truth. Though he never would have believed it, several men were already striding forward, holding tightly to legal-looking documents.

Within minutes the little store was swamped, with everyone shouting questions at Bo until he held up his hand for silence.

“I don’t think it’s fair to the Swensens that we crowd their store. Why don’t we meet somewhere else, and I’ll handle as many questions as I can.”

“How about the Red Dog?” one of the men called. “Jack Slade won’t object to a few more customers.”

Bo nodded. “All right. I’ll meet you there in a little while.” As they began filing through the doorway he turned to Kitty. “But first we’re going to see Doc Honeywell, and have him take a look at that arm.”

She gave a reluctant nod of her head. “All right. After that I want to see my brother Gabe.” She looped an arm through Yale’s. “Want to come with us?”

“You bet.” He tucked her hand in his. “Since Cara is helping Billie with the cooking at the Red Dog, I figure we can all have a midday meal there.
