I logged off my account at the library computer, which I reserved after lifting a card from the purse of an old lady I helped cross the street near the supermarket. If the authorities ever track my search history, they’ll find Heather Jennings with a lot to answer for, I’ll tell you that. I only hope that the raid will inspire in her a great terror, for the old people of America live in a vast solitude I can only dream of.

I arrived at the coffee shop at 6:15 p.m. Our date was at 6:00, but it’s best to let people wait. It’s a little-known secret that people are more engaged when they have to work a little, especially when they have to work a little for another person. It’s important they know they’re not too important.

I sauntered over and tried to appear smoldering. Curtis said men should try to look smoldering.

Aubrey stood and smiled, and it was not an unpleasant set of teeth that poked out of her mouth. She was heavier than her picture suggested, which I liked, and her hand was sweaty, and she seemed nervous.

I slid into my seat and halfway smiled at her and pretended to be shy by looking away. Playing bashful, by the way, is important for establishing camaraderie quickly, since it portrays you as vulnerable. In doing so, you psychotronically ask your partner for help.

Like a good Samaritan, she tried to make me comfortable by asking if I wanted a coffee. That meant trust was already building between us. I began to relax.

I scoped her out while we talked. Her hair was mussed and greasy. Her face was chubby and sallow, like a droopy gray glove. Gapped teeth too, I noticed, which always adds character.

I liked her right away.

“I run the IT department at my company,” I told her. “It’s a . . . well, I shouldn’t say too much. It’s a government thing, you know.”

“Oh.”

“I don’t want to get you in trouble. You understand.”

“No. Of course not.”

“And you?”

“I’m a vet tech.”

“Heh?”

“A vet tech. I take care of sick animals, do house calls, things like that. Sometimes I have to go to people’s homes and put their animals down, when they’re terminal.”

“Do you have to express their glands?”

“Sometimes.” She perked up. “It’s one of my main jobs.”

Well, this was interesting. Dying animals. Squeezing their glands. Maybe she was hiding more misery than I thought.

“How do you do it?” I asked.

“You’re interested in this? Like, actually interested?”

I picked up my glass, stared at it, then set it down. “Yes. Yes, I am.”

“You should really have two people,” she explained, mimicking with her hands. “One in the back, one in the front, that way the dog doesn’t get finicky and try to run. It isn’t very comfortable for them.”

“I can imagine.”

“Then you have to put on a glove and reach inside with two fingers. You may have to move the fecal matter aside to find the gland. Then you squeeze until it all drains out.
