Later that night, I’d just finished recording a Tove Lo song I’d found on YouTube when my phone beeped. Evan’s name glowed from my screen. I put down my bow and reached over to read what he’d sent.

Evan: Hey beautiful

Beautiful! I almost dropped my phone.

Evan: What are you up to?

My heart was doing the weird fluttering thing again and I couldn’t help but message back immediately.

Amelia: Just about to upload a new song. Hope you like it!

Evan was the first person to like my TikTok. We ended up messaging for ages that night. I sent him the songs I was rehearsing for my solo. He even wanted to see pictures of the best rocks in my collection. I’d never shown anyone except Nisha before. But Evan liked the same kind of things as me. Nature, rock pooling, lizards, reading. It’s not like he was officially my boyfriend. I mean, we barely even spoke to each other at school. But it definitely felt like that was the way it was heading. Just as I was about to go to sleep, my phone went off again.

Evan: Goodnight you Mighty Maggot!

My heart stung, as though someone had poured antiseptic all over it. I knew I only had myself to blame. It’s funny! I’d told him. Hilarious! Or something like that. I must have been called Maggot a million times. But now, from Evan, that word hurt more than it ever had before.
