eing overweight is not merely a cosmetic problem. It is a highly visible signal that the owner of the excess baggage is at high risk of getting a depressing cluster of dreaded diseases. What is disturbing is that the problem is growing at an alarming rate. Surveys done in Indian cities have revealed that about one-third of adults are overweight. Further, in these cities, about one-third of 10-15 year-olds belonging to affluent families are overweight: the proportion is likely to increase by the time these adolescents turn into adults. Urban India is promising to catch up with Europe and North America where half the adults today are overweight.
