DAVID PARKED ACROSS the street from the Falls Island estate of Robert and Nancy Ardmore and waited for the van-load of furniture from Todd’s condo to arrive. He couldn’t see much of the mansion. Tall, carefully groomed hedges hid even the massive stone walls surrounding the property. But he knew from having checked the county assessor’s file that the house had fourteen bedrooms, fifteen baths, two kitchens, an outdoor and indoor swimming pool, four saunas, two hot tubs and a tennis court.

He also knew from having talked to Fred, the friendly Falls Island security guard, that billionaire industrialist Robert Ardmore had the latest in security systems installed behind those hedge-lined walls.

But his conversation with Fred wasn’t the only event from the night before that was still very much on his mind.

When Susan had invited him to look through her camera lens, he’d been very aware of how close she remained. When their shoulders brushed, he’d heard her startled in-take of breath. And still she had stayed where she was, so close to him that he could smell the scent of her hair.

To David, that had been a startling, welcome invitation, an invitation that had taken every ounce of his control not to accept. He’d tried to make himself move away, but he hadn’t been able to. He’d barely been able to keep himself from closing the small distance separating them.

Except it wasn’t a small distance separating them. It was an abyss.

For the hundredth time he reminded himself that she was not only his client, but also mourning her dead husband and facing an unexpected pregnancy. To take advantage of her vulnerability would be a breach of every ethic he possessed.

He would not touch her.

But it was costing him. When she so boldly implied to the security guard that he was her husband, he had to restrain himself from wrapping his arms around her and kissing her for such an inspired explanation. After waiting outside the Falls Island gates and following her home to make sure she got there safely, he had lain awake the rest of the night, trying not to imagine what kissing her would have been like.

He had to find out where Todd was and close this case. Fast.

He heard the engine of a heavy vehicle and saw the moving van approach the gate. He watched as the driver leaned out of the cab and pressed the intercom button at the entrance to the Ardmore mansion. After an exchange of conversation, the entry gates swung open to admit the van. David was trying to decide whether he should head to the top of the hill to see if he could get a view of the front of the house with his binoculars, when Todd’s BMW suddenly drove out and took off down the road.

He couldn’t see who was driving, but chances were good it was Todd. Part of being a successful private investigator was luck. Some of that luck seemed to be with him today. He followed the BMW.
