It’s another twenty minutes before I hear his light snores. I carefully lift his arm and place it beside him before sliding from the bed. I look down and there’s no blood, which I’m relieved about. The thought of him seeing that makes me shudder.

Dressing quickly, I creep to the door, carefully opening it and stepping out into the hallway. “Fancy seeing you here.” It’s Ice’s cold voice, and I freeze, slowly turning to face him. “Good night?”

I take in his bruised, swollen face. “What happened?”

“What do you think happened, princess? Lover boy got all pissed because you ran. Why did you run?”

My mouth opens and closes a few times. “I was scared.”

“Bullshit. I’m on to you.”

He moves past me. “What do you mean?” I ask.

“Just watch your back, princess. I don’t trust you, and I certainly don’t think you’re here for Widow.”

I let him walk away before I rush up to my room. I take a few calming breaths then pick up my phone and call Jack.

“Ice doesn’t trust me,” I blurt out the minute he answers.

“Right?”

“He basically just threatened me.”

“Are you telling me you’re compromised?”

“Yes . . . no . . . I don’t fucking know.”

“Take a breath, Lexi, and tell me what happened.”

“He got beat up. He’s a mess. I asked what happened, and he said Axel did it because I ran off yesterday. I said I ran because I was scared, and he didn’t believe me. He said he’s on to me and he doesn’t trust me.”

“He’s got a bruised ego. It’s an empty threat.”

“What if it’s not? What if he goes digging around?”

“He won’t find anything. We’ve wiped your police record. You worked in a supermarket and a bar back home. That’s it. That’s all he can find.”

“They know my dad. What if they contact him?”

“They won’t. Besides, we’re monitoring his phone lines.”

I frown. “Since when?”

“Since you went in there. Any calls from the Chaos Demons will automatically be shut down.”

“I’m getting worried.”

“You’re doing great. Just relax. Get something that’ll close that club down, so we can both go home.” He disconnects, and I throw my phone onto the bed.

“Easier said than done,” I mutter out loud.

I jump in fright when a loud knock on the door scares the crap out of me. I jump away from it and let out a scream. “Lexi, open the door,” shouts Axel.

Fear grips me at the thought he may have heard that conversation. I strip out of my clothes as quietly as possible. “I’m about to shower. Can I come and find you in a minute?” I ask.

“Open the fucking door,” he growls.

My entire body begins to shake, and I contemplate calling Jack for help. “I’m naked,” I say weakly.

“I’ll kick it down if you don’t open it right now.”

I pace behind the door, shaking my hands like that’ll somehow make this easier. I stop, take a deep breath, and plaster a smile on my face before sliding the lock. The door opens immediately, almost catching my foot. I jump back, and Axel glares at me, slamming the door closed.
