CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Why didn’t she recognize this room at all?

Puzzled and feeling disoriented all over again, Nina looked around her.

This was her view from the bed, which should be familiar, but it was as if she’d never seen it before. A painting on the wall opposite – a seascape in shades of blue and green that was calming and tranquil. The small window on the right hand wall that looked out over faraway twinkling lights, with blue curtains ready to be drawn. The wardrobe, one of the dark wood pieces that made this apartment feel so luxurious, and the nightstand, with a light on it that had a soft cream lampshade.

Scouring her mind, Nina reached the perplexing conclusion that she had no memory at all of this room. None whatsoever.

Were there going to be permanent holes in her memory? That fact was worrying, and it might impact on her future career. Maybe her mother’s desire for her to change careers might end up becoming reality, because she could not return to full time, one hundred percent performance if that happened.

“Surely not,” she muttered, sitting up and staring around, waiting for the familiar flash to occur.

She'd been able to ground herself when she had walked into the apartment. She'd automatically wanted to walk across the living room kic,k off her shoes, and settle down in that armchair near the bookcase. That was where her mind told her she'd been before.

Not here.

Hmmm.

Nina frowned as she scrambled up from the bed, limped across the floor, and opened the door, the fragrant aroma of spicy beef soup immediately making her mouth water.

Maybe there was a reason, and it was one that she hadn't even considered until now. But perhaps it made sense. The familiarity she felt with Daniel, the worry he'd visibly had on seeing her, the fragments of memory of that vicious argument that hadn't felt work-related.

Was there more between herself and her partner? Or rather, had there been?

She wondered, if she walked into the master bedroom at the end of the corridor, if that would feel familiar?

Nervousness clenched at her stomach as she wondered if she should ask Daniel about their past, and how close they’d been. How on earth did you approach a question like that? What if she was wrong about it, what if it ended up being embarrassing and divisive for both of them?

Or what if he'd changed his mind about her in the two years and was now seeing somebody else? She had no idea if that might be the case, although she was surprised that the thought gave her an instant pang of regret.

But it made the question even more loaded.

Was she going to be doing the right thing by asking it?

No, Nina told herself. Don’t do it. Right now, you’ve got enough on your plate. If walking into that bedroom brings back more memories, you might find you’re not ready for them.

She headed into the kitchen and leaned against the counter, where Daniel had set out two glasses of water with slices of mint and lemon.
