Chapter Ten

I’ve gotten into quite a routine since moving to La Jolla. Every morning, I’m up early to drink my coffee on the back patio. After that, it’s my strength yoga and a shower. Once I’m ready, I make another coffee and head over to Marco’s. It’s about a fifteen-minute walk which I usually don’t mind, but today, it’s actually raining in Southern California. I check the weather app on my phone and see that it won’t be stopping anytime soon.

“Need a ride?” Avery appears in the kitchen looking half asleep. Her hair is disheveled in that ridiculously sexy way that looks like someone else’s hands have been in it. Maybe there have. I try not to care.

I shrug. “I can get an Uber.”

She shakes her head and leans against the doorframe. “Totally unnecessary. I’m heading to Marco’s for a meeting today. I’ll just go in early.”

I check the time. “Well, if you’re sure it’s no trouble. I hate to be trouble. I like to be easy. I mean, I’m not easy.” Avery laughs. “I didn’t mean it like that. Ugh. Will you go get dressed and put me out of my misery?”

She runs a hand over her bare stomach, hooking her fingers into the waistband of her boxers. “Does my state of undress make you uncomfortable, Peach?”

“No.” Lie. “I just need to get to work on time.”

Avery smirks. “Uh-huh. Okay. Give me ten minutes.”

I sit on the sofa and kick my Crocs up onto the coffee table while Avery heads back to her room. In less than ten minutes, she is dressed and looking like her usual sexy self. Today it’s jeans and a black T-shirt featuring a random indie band I never heard of, Ray-Bans, and her very worn-in checkered Vans.

She grabs her keys from the hook next to the front door and slides her Ray-Bans over her eyes. “You ready?”

We both take off running to get to her car, the cool rain pelting us as we go. Once we’re inside, we laugh and shake off the water. I pull her visor down to check my face in the mirror. I use the tip of my finger to swipe at a smudge in my lipstick.

“Still gorgeous,” Avery says. “You didn’t melt.”

“What am I? The Wicked Witch of the West? Just making sure my makeup didn’t get ruined in the rain. I mean, it’s Southern California. It never rains here so I don’t invest in waterproofing anything.”

Backing out of the driveway and into the street, Avery looks up at the sky. “Yeah. This is pretty rare. And I just meant that sugar melts in the rain. And you, Peach? Well, I imagine that you’re sweeter than candy.”

I sigh and glance out of the window. My mind races with conversation starters and small talk, but nothing comes out. The longer we go without talking, the more awkward the air feels. I’m glad that it’s a short ride to Marco’s or I might implode.

“Thanks for giving me a ride,” I finally say.
