Floating-point operations per second (FLOPS)—This metric is similar to the IPS, above, as it also represents a notion of processing throughput. It was primarily designed to make comparisons between machines designed to carry out the heavy mathematics required by scientific applications, hence the focus on floating-point operations in particular. Like with IPS, a predefined set of instructions compose a benchmark that, in some cases, have been standardised, to permit fair comparisons. Interestingly, this metric is used to compare supercomputers in the yearly Top500 competition. Currently the top machines are running in the petaFLOPS (1015 FLOPS) region of performance.
