Bath Time
Auditory: If the child reacts negatively to the sound of the running water, first try having a slow, gentle stream of water and, over time, gradually increase the amount of force as the child adapts. Have the child turn the water on and off when outside of the tub so he or she can control the sensory input.
Olfactory: Try different soaps and shampoos to determine any preferences, and once preferences have been found, gradually introduce new scents.
Tactile: If a child dislikes water in his or her face, during hair rinsing, hold a washcloth over the childâs eyes or place a sticker or picture of a favorite character on the ceiling for the child to look at, which will tilt the head in a position to decrease the water flow over the face. If the child dislikes being washed, use cues such as âTime to wash your _____,â pointing or touching the body part to help prepare the child. Determine if lighter or firmer touch is better tolerated. If the child is able, have him or her help wash. Over time, decrease accommodations to help the child gain new acceptance.
Vestibular: If the child does not like being tipped backward, use a bowl to rinse the hair while the child is in a sitting position.
Visual: For children who do not like bubbles in the water or changes to the color of the water when bubble bath or color-changing tablets are used, first use small amounts and gradually increase as tolerance improves. Allow the child to choose the color of the soap, tablets, bubbles, or other medium that is not readily accepted.
