CHAPTER 16

DREAM DEBUTS AT DORTMUND

Now that Pierre-Emerick was a French League Cup winner, would Saint-Étienne be able to hold on to their superstar striker? Galtier hoped so, but it wouldn’t be easy. Suddenly, lots of Europe’s top clubs wanted to buy Pierre-Emerick:

PSG in France,

Schalke 04 and Borussia Dortmund in Germany,

Roma and Fiorentina in Italy,

Tottenham and Newcastle United in England.

Russian club Rubin Kazan were the first to make an offer, but Saint-Étienne said no straight away. They wanted more money for their most valuable player. By the end of June 2013, there were two teams leading the race: Newcastle and Dortmund.

Pierre-Emerick had a difficult decision to make. On the one hand, he loved the idea of playing in the Premier League, the best league in the world. With his speed, he was sure he could become a star at St James’ Park, even if Newcastle weren’t yet challenging for the title.

But on the other hand, playing in the Bundesliga would be exciting too, and he had heard great things about the Dortmund manager, Jürgen Klopp. He had a great reputation for developing young players, and he was offering him a chance to play in the Champions League.

In the end, it was Klopp who made his mind up for him. Just when it looked like Pierre-Emerick was about to sign for Newcastle, the Dortmund manager spoke to his dad.

‘I truly believe that this is the right club for your son,’ Klopp persuaded him. ‘My team’s style of play will suit Pierre-Emerick perfectly. We’ll make the most of his speed and turn him into a world-class superstar. He’ll score lots of goals and win lots of trophies here.’

Yaya was impressed, and so was Pierre-Emerick. During the previous season, Dortmund had finished second in the Bundesliga and reached the Champions League final. In both competitions, it was Bayern Munich who had beaten them. Dortmund’s young forward, Mario Götze, had just moved to Bayern, which meant that Klopp needed a new attacker to play alongside Marco Reus and Robert Lewandowski.

‘That’s going to be me!’ Pierre-Emerick said excitedly.

In early July, the deal was done, and he was officially a Dortmund player. He posed for photos with Klopp and the club’s other two new signings:

A big Greek centre-back called Sokratis Papastathopoulos,

And a playmaker from Armenia called Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

‘You’ve all got such long names!’ their new manager laughed. ‘I can say Sokratis, but from now on, you’re Mkhi and you’re Auba, okay?’

‘Okay!’

After three tiring weeks of preseason training, Pierre-Emerick couldn’t wait to make his competitive debut in the yellow-and-black shirt. The new season started with the Supercup: Dortmund versus Bayern Munich.

‘Bring it on!’ Pierre-Emerick was really looking forward to his first taste of Germany’s biggest football rivalry. He was starting on the bench, but hopefully he would get a chance to shine in the second half.

With sixty minutes gone, Dortmund were 3–1 up, but then Arjen Robben pulled one back for Bayern. Uh oh, were they going to lose again? No, Dortmund just needed to hold on and hit Bayern on the counter-attack.
