NINE

It was as if they had stepped into a new universe. Building after building boasted colorful, strange and wild pop art that screamed for their undivided attention. They walked down the sidewalk admiring the work.

Sunny was particularly enamored with a large pink building with a little girl drawn on it. A large tree sat on top of the wall creating the illusion of actual hair. They all agreed it looked just like her youngest daughter Rya. She dug up an old Instagram photo of her. It was freakishly uncanny. She took a photo and created a side by side image she posted on her page.

DeeDee was giving them a full on art tour. Earlier, she had them check out the RC Cola Plant, an abandoned building tagged with graffiti that had been revitalized into a prime event space. Then brought them to the Warehouse gallery which featured modern and vintage art. Bri loved the immersive nature of the work. You could walk in through, go beneath or even touch some of the pieces.

The Unicorn Factory was also a hit, room after room of a cacophony of colors, bubbles, and unicorns everywhere.

“We’ve got to bring the girls here next year,” Kayla suggested, just as soon as a five year old girl started screaming that she didn’t want to leave. Her mother was dragging her to the door. They watched the scene, feeling bad for the woman.

DeeDee thought it was hilarious. Kayla did not. “On second thought, she said, “I’m good.”

They walked from colorful block to colorful block for a while until DeeDee suggested they make a stop at a beverage shop covered in it’s own over the top design of bubbles and leaves. She treated them to some authentic bubble tea.

While they rested their feet, DeeDee tapped away on her phone.

“When’s your friend’s art reveal happening?” Bri asked.

“I’m going to meet up with her right now, actually. The reveal will be in about forty-five minutes.”

“Then just shoot us the location. We’ll catch up,” Sunny said. She wanted to take a few more selfies and photos of the buildings.

“Bet. I’m gonna steal this one though,” DeeDee said, referring to Bri. “You guys don’t mind do you?”

“You can take her so long as you return her in one piece,” Kayla said.

“I’ll take care of her. I promise.”

Charisse sipped loudly through her straw. “I bet you will.”

Bri pinched her under her arm as she got up from her seat.

“Ouch. What was that for?”

“You know damn well.”

Charisse gave her the evil eye. “Come on ladies,” she said, taking her bubble tea with her. “I will not stand for this abuse.”

They left the cafe going in opposite directions. “Your friends are hee-larious,” DeeDee said.

“They are. Especially Reece. She keeps me on my toes, that one.”

“I think my friends would like you too. They’re a little more cynical and they’d put your feet to the fire, but you’re smart. They’re suckers for a smart chick.”

“You’re already thinking about introducing me to your friends?”

“Why not? I met yours.”

Bri’s heart skipped a beat.
