CHAPTER SIXTEEN

To Mage Fisk’s credit, he did not waste time with pleasantries or protests, simply knelt at Fionn’s side and put a hand on her chest. The sensation of magic being used wound up Thea’s arms, surprising her with its warmth. It was not anything like the compelling feel of Niath’s magic, but it was pleasant, carrying none of the chill she associated with most human magic and at odds with the arrogance Fisk normally displayed.

She straightened and took a few steps away from Fionn, giving the mage room to work, and frowned at him. When she had met him before, he had seemed purely human. But now she wondered if she had been too quick to judge, seeing only the arrogance, and whether she had missed something. And if she had missed his true nature, what else she might have missed?

“Mage Fisk is a natural healer,” Niath told her, his eyes on the mage working on Fionn. He glanced up and held Thea’s gaze for a moment. “They are rare, but their healing gift is very strong.”

“For all the good it does me,” Fisk said, with his hand still on Fionn’s chest. “She’s got broken bones in her back and her skull is in pieces. I can heal her, but it’s going to take a while. And I’ll need some food.”

“Here.” Niath drew a pair of cloth packets out of his robes that Thea recognised. The packets would most likely contain oatcakes. She was tempted to ask for one herself, but Fionn’s need for healing was far greater. “That should help to start with, and I’ll ask the kitchen to send you some more.”

“Should we try to move her?” Thea asked.

“Not unless you want to do more damage,” Fisk answered, setting the food from Niath to one side and putting his other hand on Fionn’s head. He glanced up. “Didn’t you hear me? This is going to take a while.”

“Alright,” Thea said, and took a careful step back, away from the mage. Her foot bumped into the ledger on the ground and she bent to pick it up. “We’ll leave you be for the time being.”

“There’s a bell in the study,” Niath said, looking towards the door. “Assuming it’s safe to go in?”

“I don’t see how we can possibly do more damage,” Thea said.

Niath’s mouth lifted in an unexpected smile and he went into the study, heading for the fireplace. There was a small, old metal bell hanging above the fireplace and he rang it once. The small sound echoed through the house, carrying with it the faint trace of magic.

Fascinated, Thea went into the room to inspect the bell more closely.

“A lot of the larger houses have them,” Niath explained. “They’re connected to the servants’ quarters downstairs. One of the household staff should be along in a moment.”

“I don’t remember seeing them at Brightfield House,” Thea commented. It made a certain sort of sense to have a ready means of calling for servants in a house this big.

“No,” Niath agreed, turning to the room around them.
