Eleven

The bureau was dark when they returned, barren of life or purpose. The absence of Marcella and Valka filled Niamh with relief and she wondered if the two were sleeping, or if Marcella had taken her fate into her hands and left to explore Lunden, confident that Cyrus’ life had been taken.

Hytham limped into the bureau. The ride had been hard on him, as had the battle. Niamh knew that if Marcella saw him in this state, she would blame her. Imagining Valka’s disappointed gaze even made Niamh squirm as if she had actually been responsible for Hytham’s injuries. Again, she felt the urge to leave the Hidden Ones and find safety back in her homeland or with Avalon. Marcella was looking for reasons to get rid of her, even as Hytham worked hard to bring her into the fold.

But she wasn’t safe on her own. The Descendants were active, and the Ancient Ones would no doubt know she was a new Hidden One. She had more enemies now than she ever had before.

She needed Hytham and Marcella and Valka, at least until Excalibur was returned. She needed them to keep her safe.

“Can I do anything to help you?” she asked Hytham as she deposited the unnamed woman, who was still sleeping, onto a pile of furs in the corner near the fire. Their charge slept on, unaware that she had been brought into a whole new place.

“I likely just need rest,” Hytham replied, settling into one of the chairs by the fire.

“I do have some training in healing. Is there something I can do for you?” She repeated the question, ignoring that he had given her a no. She had seen patients like Hytham before, who didn’t want to be treated as special. Who preferred to behave like cats who wandered off to die or to lick their own wounds in peace. “Before Valka comes in here and sees what we’ve done?”

Hytham sighed. “Perhaps you have a point. I did sustain a wound to my leg, but this weakness seems to affect my whole body. It feels like the problem lies within the muscles. They aren’t always difficult, but after a blow they can spasm, flaring up the injury once more.” Niamh lifted her hand to his leg, where she could feel the muscle trembling under her hands and saw the wound. Deep, yes, but nothing that would cause such weakness that she had witnessed on their ride back.

“How did they treat it?” she asked as she gently massaged the spasm, seeing if she could will it into stillness with her hands.

He groaned and then grimaced in pain. It seemed that the spasm hurt more than the actual wound. “Rest, medicine. Wrappings. The initial injury healed, but even now, it still continues to bother me,” he said.

Ah. Wrappings. That was something she could work with. She’d tended many a warrior after a fight, and this was familiar ground. It was also ground that made her look useful to the Hidden Ones.
