Jackie Kennedy (right) was still wearing her blood-stained suit when she boarded Air Force One.

Stoughton was among those who departed Air Force One. His plan was to linger in Dallas long enough to have the film processed and choose which picture to release to the public. Thinking back, he said he was then far less worried than he’d been only 10 minutes before. Opting to play it safe, he had taken four shots of the ceremony with one camera and four more with the other. That way, if the Hasselblad had malfunctioned, chances would have been good that the event had been duly documented.

In fact, as he stepped out onto the tarmac, Stoughton was clutching the audio as well as the visual documentation. Malcolm Kilduff, who was returning to Washington with the new president, had just handed the photographer the sound recording he had made. As a result, Stoughton was overtaken by a deep sense of duty to both the world and posterity. He “felt that he had been made totally responsible for history’s record of this momentous event,” historian Richard B. Trask wrote. “The visible continuity of the Republic had been accomplished. The government continued. And Stoughton was carrying the proof.”
