A year and a half ago, when I finally left Bhubaneswar, I had decided that I’d never go back. But Prabhudev made me go back. Either he or Mitali. It could be a trap. I longed to fall into it. Because Prabhudev was an important step in my investigation. I needed to step on him to reach another – my assassin, and his connection with Samir.

I made a plan to meet Prabhudev. Aseema managed to sneak out the details from his appointment diary. He returned from Spain on Friday. On Saturday, at seven-thirty in the evening, there was a Christmas eve dinner at the Blue Flower Lagoon. Four people who had come from the company’s office in Britain were his guests, along with their families.

I checked in at the Blue Flower Lagoon. Just twenty-five thousand per night! Money, after all, is impermanent – just a flow, comes and goes. But life? I waited in the restaurant from seven o’clock onwards. It was certain that his superiors, those Britishers, were sticklers for time. Surely, he would arrive before time to keep them in good spirits? Just as I had thought – he came in half an hour early. I went up to him. He started.

‘Hello, Prabhudevji, I hope you are well?’ I asked.

He stared at me.

‘I need to know two things: tell me at once. That’s best for us both.’

He looked at me, caught completely off guard.

‘First, the real name and address of S. Prakash. Second, your connection with Samir Sayyid.’

I looked at the clock in the hall.

‘It is 7.02 now. I’ll wait until 7.07.’

That was it. Be terse when you speak to former superior officers. One or two sentences, with as much information as they can carry. I returned to my table. But there was someone else sitting there. I thought he had made a mistake. I was wrong. A couple of days back, the PM had warned us that it was no breeze that was blowing here but a veritable storm, and that all criminals would be caught red-handed. That came true! At least I was caught, red-handed. The person who was sitting at my table smiled and waved, and then held out his hand. That was truly a blow in the dark. Know who it was? Any guesses?
