Iâd just worked up the courage to go to her room.
I was going to knock on her door, kiss her the second she opened it and apologize for being such an ass all dayâbut when I stepped out my door and saw her coming up the stairs ⦠I froze.
Her green eyes were troubled, her face flustered; this heat was too much for her. Iâd noticed the brooch on her horse's saddle and knew that telling her to use it for herself would only result in an argument, so Iâd ignored it.
I hated myself for making her feel whatever emotion had given her that expression, but I couldnât bring myself to tell her ⦠not yet.
I waited for her to be clear of the stairs, but instead of going into her room she went into the bathing room. I thought for a second of following her in but it seemed too forward. Then again, after the night before, maybe it wasnât. I let out a breath and forced my feet to move, forced my mind to stop thinking of my hands on her body, touching her in ways Iâd longed to do since Iâd first met her.
I trudged down the stairs and into the bar area, taking a seat in the far corner of the room with a perfect view of the stairs. I flagged down one of the barmaids and ordered a drink before resting my head in my folded arms.
I wished Rangkar was with me. He would have been sensible and told me to get over it and go talk to her like he always did, forgetting that Iâm Osirian, that the world hated me and my people even more than they hated his.
Perhaps the night before was a mistake, maybe I could take it all back and we could start again, or maybe I should have asked for one room, should have followed her up the stairs and knocked on her door like Iâd wanted to. Glik had said as much.
I thanked the barmaid as she placed my tankard in front of me and lightly gave my shoulder a squeeze. Sheâd worked for Glik for a while now, lasting longer than most, I remembered helping her a couple of times with drunk patrons and unwanted advances.
I knocked back half of my drink before Glik could take the seat across from me and glare from the otherside of the table.
âWhat?â I demanded, not in the mood for one of his lectures.
âNothing.â He shrugged. âI just think she has a right to know.â
âSheâll find out soon enough.â I took another deep swig and signaled to the maid for another. She gave me a reluctant smile but turned to fill another tankard anyway.
âShe should know before you get there and she should hear it from you.â
I ran my hands over my face, massaging my dry eyes with my finger tips. âI know, I just ⦠canât. It would change everything and after last night ⦠sheâd think the worst of me.
