Chapter 10

The weight of two compact SIGs resting against Rex’s back is reassuring as he wanders through the public area of Tan Son Nhat International Airport, keeping away from security checkpoints and customs line-ups. Rex swapped out the annoying aviator sunglasses for a set of black-tinted wrap-around lenses that allow him to check his peripheral, the movement of his eyes invisible to passersby. He’s back to wearing a fitted black t-shirt with a blue short sleeve button-down, one with a long tail to hide the guns. The loose shirt gives him easy access to both SIGs if things go pear-shaped. The original stinky leather coat he wore for the flight is stuffed into his luggage, riding in the back of the vehicle Wesley went out to acquire—by theft or by purchase, Rex has no idea. He just cares that they’ll have a car that drives and will hold the entire family.

Rex still hopes that things won’t turn sour. The problem is that he knows something will happen, and he’s never trusted that fucking feeling. It’s the same sensation no matter if it’s “a hamster escaped” or “potential nuclear strike.”

Django is off to Rex’s left, chatting up the vendor running the media stands in fluent, fast Vietnamese, so Rex is only grasping about one word in five. He heard something about chicken penis a few minutes ago and decided it was best to just stop listening.

Kai is drift-pacing off to Rex’s right, wandering in the opposite direction. His eyes are glued to the open magazine in his hands. It looks like he’s reading, but there is a small square mirror resting on the right-side page, allowing Kai to see everything going on behind him. Between Kai’s professionally short hair, knee-length rain duster, and the oversized glasses on his face, he looks like a business contact getting steadily pissed off about how long it’s taking someone to arrive. In fact, Kai’s brow has been sinking lower and lower in irritated dismay. He knows something’s up, too, but if he knew what was wrong, he would have bumped into Rex to mention it.

Rex glances over at his father, who is always aware of when one of his kids is seeking his attention. Django meets Rex’s eyes and lifts one shoulder in a faint shrug: he doesn’t know what’s coming, either. Just that it will.

Rex checks the boards to find that they’ve changed in the last few minutes. The two flights that Ella, Ambrus, Khodī̂, and Brian flew in on have both arrived. Now it’s only about waiting for the group to get through customs, watching as they get their luggage from the baggage claim area beyond the last security checkpoint, and then they’ll be among Rex, Kai, and Django, who can keep an eye on them as they all leave the damned airport.

Rex feels a tension headache build and presses sharply along the pressure points on his forehead, trying to convince it to leave him alone. He’s had enough caffeine pills to keep
