Chapter 15

The game

Finally, Davie, his father, and Ted had left for Berkeley. Elly hoped that the directions and all the information she had given them would be enough. Ted would be reliable, and she could count on him. Their father was another matter. Jerry’s alcoholism and smoking would not be helpful for Davie’s health. In the end, she had to trust them to take good care of her youngest son. It was going to be for only a few days. Todd had said that they would only be gone three to four days at the most. Elly was looking forward to getting out of the apartment and out of the city. It had been too long since she had smelled the fragrant mountain air. Maybe she could do some running.

Elly hummed a tune as she packed a bag for herself. She loved thinking of getting away with her sweetheart even if this was a trip to investigate a possible murder. She thought about how strange it was to be happy when someone else maybe mourning. I don’t wish anyone grief. But Marie should not have died, and someone must pay. Maybe Georgie will be found alive. Wouldn’t that be an adventure? Todd thinks this professional man would get rid of him because he is a witness. This professional killer is scary. I shudder to think of that so-called hunter who sounded like the man who abducted me. I don’t want to meet him ever again.

When she was all packed, she brought the suitcase into the living area. Just then the intercom came to life. “Mr. Todd Markam is here. Can I send him up?”

Elly responded with joyfulness. “Sure, send him as fast as you can.”

A few minutes later, the doorbell rang, and she opened the door. There stood Todd in jeans and a sweatshirt, and next to him was a German shepherd dog. “Well, what is this?”

“This, dearest, is Fred. He is going to be your new guardian. You can run with him and take him everywhere. This time away will help you and Fred get accustomed to each other and bonded.”

She knelt down and petted Fred’s burley neck and back. “He is beautiful, and he is so calm.”

“Fred is a retired army dog, and then he joined the police canine crew and has been doing that for the last five years. Recently, he got retired from that, and now he will keep you safe. He took a bullet a few months ago, but the vet thinks he has about five more good years of work. Neil, who manages the canine force, thought he had seen enough rough work and should be retired to a family. I thought he would be perfect for you. So here he is.”

Elly knelt down to Fred’s level. “Oh, you poor baby, you were shot. I will smother you with love and give you a good home with lots of runs in the park. I know I am going to feel safe too. Do I have to be trained to manage him?” She nuzzled his soft ears and kissed his forehead.
