CHAPTER 15

The toasty warmth and comfort of the sheriff’s station was a welcome change from the wind and frigid atmosphere of the original settlement and greasy repulsive setting of that diner. It had been a while since I was inside any type of police station. I avoided them. For the most part, they all shared similar layouts. Even the Dalyville Sheriff’s Station was no different, although the rough years of the small town had taken its toll on the station as well. The timeworn wooden benches of the waiting area and large U-shaped sergeant’s desk were just as ugly as the faded yellow paint.

Usually, if there were questions by the upper brass in New Orleans, they met me on the scene of an incident or preferred to come to my office, so they wouldn’t be seen. The conversations almost always went one of two ways: what supernatural forces caused the bloodshed on some unexplained crime scene, or if was I interested in wearing the shield again? The answer was always no to the latter. I knew the leadership of my former employer enjoyed their plausible deniability, and I could never do the job the way it needed to be done under the watchful eye of the badge. The prolonged absence of wearing the badge no longer gave me a feeling of safety or purpose when I entered a police station. Tonight, was an exception.

“Okay, Nola. You have our attention. Deputy Farley is at the morgue, and we’re probably in the safest place in town, before or after dark. Your story of the original families caught me off guard, but I get the feeling there’s more to it. What is it you aren’t telling us?” Sheriff Alfred raised his brow as he fiddled with the brim of his hat, unnerved by the information he recently learned about his hometown.

“It’s not just some story, Sheriff. It’s all accounted for in the ledgers and diaries my sister collected and found. That history and this symbol explain why there was so much uneasiness and energy surrounding that place.”

I held up the impression I took from the well. Their eyes darted in its direction.

“Forgive me, but what does that have to do with Ms. Jones? It seems you’re here on some monster hunt, while my boss is still missing. What are we going to do to find her?” Tammy added.

The high-pitched tone of her voice contradicted her well put together demeanor. I often forget how some of these sights can affect people. Their reality breaks when exposed to the supernatural world. With Tammy, I’m reminded of how she reacted to the view of the deputy’s disfigured body.

“My sister is dead.” I said in a softer tone. “This isn’t a game. The only way this works is if we understand the truth of everything and everyone involved in it. It’s not a monster hunt, at least not yet. Anyway, if my instincts are right, all the events, past and present, are connected,” I replied, as I lowered my notepad in frustration and placed it into my back pocket.
