Gillespie lay on the bed, curled up like a fetus. He held a rifle in his hands, the muzzle between his teeth, blood and brain matter smeared across the pillow and back wall.

Gillespie would tell them no more.

suicide ? Or murder?' Alec said the words, which also puzzled Isabelle.

"We must assume murder," she said. "An aggressive, argumentative man like Des Gillespie is unlikely to curl up in bed to shoot himself."

'That strikes me as very strange, too. As is the odd timing.” He looked around the room and into the wardrobe, which was leaning askew against the wall. “You stay here, Bella. I'll look around outside."

She shouldn't have minded being alone in the room with a corpse, but her body obviously didn't care about her sanity. The moment Alec walked out the door, the uneasiness set in and her entire body was tense, ready for either flight or fight. Had it been up to her feet, she would have been on her way to the door and after Alec by now. Perhaps, whispered the inner voice, it was less the silent company in the room than the lack of Alec's presence that upset her so much.

Quit the stupid stuff, O'Connell, and get on with your job.

"So what can you tell me, Des?" she whispered to the corpse.
